91: In Chinese myth, the universe was created from an egg!

China has a couple of creation myths, but the most iconic one features Pangu, a mysterious primordial giant who had been born out of an egg. This egg had been the only object existing within the universe—a result of thousands upon thousands of years of primordial matter shifting and solidifying.

When Pangu emerged from the egg, he started creating the world by bringing order into the chaotic matter. He separated the yin (passive elements that formed the earth) from the yang (active elements that formed the sky). Nothing else existed in the universe at the time, though. After 18,000 years, however, Pangu passed away, and the disintegrating elements of his body became the elements of nature as we know them today: His left eye became the sun and his right eye the moon; his head formed mountains; his blood became rivers; his muscles turned into fertile soil; his hairs formed trees and bushes; his bones turned into minerals; and his sweat into rain. Finally, the fleas that had been living on his skin turned into animals. At the end of the whole process, a powerful goddess known as Huaxu emerged from Pangu’s dead body. She would later give birth to the rest of the deities in the Chinese pantheon.
